Children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often navigate a complex landscape of sensory and developmental challenges. Recent research highlighting visual impairments in ASD suggests that ocular health plays a significantly larger role in behavioral symptoms than previously understood. Because these children may struggle with eye contact or communication, their visual issues often remain undiagnosed, potentially worsening their social and motor development.
A comparative study investigated 57 children aged 7 to 18 years to evaluate their ophthalmological status. The researchers discovered that 42.1% of the participants suffered from detectable visual impairments. Specifically, exotropia was the most frequent finding, occurring in 21% of the group. Additionally, 15.8% of children exhibited stereopsis deficits, while 5.3% had convergence insufficiency. These conditions can interfere with a child's ability to focus on near tasks and navigate their physical environment safely.
The study further examined how vision affects psychological health through various standardized scales. Results indicated that children in the visually impaired group had significantly higher scores for attention deficit and anxiety. Consequently, poor ocular health might exacerbate core ASD symptoms, such as repetitive behaviors and social withdrawal. Therefore, a child’s irritability or lack of focus may sometimes stem from an uncorrected vision problem rather than their primary neurodevelopmental diagnosis.
Early identification of refractive errors or strabismus is essential for holistic care. Practitioners should implement routine eye examinations as a standard part of the ASD diagnostic pathway. Furthermore, clinicians must use specialized techniques to accommodate limited eye contact and poor cooperation. As a result, correcting vision can potentially reduce behavioral stressors and improve the overall quality of life for neurodivergent children.
The most common findings include exotropia (outward eye turning), stereopsis deficits (impaired depth perception), and refractive errors like astigmatism or myopia.
Visual impairments are often linked to higher levels of anxiety and increased attention deficit. In contrast, clear vision helps a child engage better with social cues and reduces sensory frustration.
Many children with ASD struggle with bright lights, physical touch, and the need for prolonged eye contact. Therefore, pediatric ophthalmologists often use non-contact methods and sensory-friendly tools to complete a comprehensive check.
