Depression represents a major health challenge globally, requiring innovative and integrated intervention strategies. The Vincular Project introduces a study protocol for a randomized controlled trial (RCT) specifically targeting 24-hour movement behaviors in adults. By focusing on the interaction between physical activity, sedentary time, and sleep, this intervention aims to provide a sustainable path toward reducing depressive symptoms.
The intervention utilizes Self-Determination Theory (SDT) to foster intrinsic motivation among participants. This 16-week trial involves Brazilian adults who engage in twice-weekly meetings, both in-person and online. Furthermore, the program structures activities into four logical blocks. Initially, participants contextualize their current health status. Subsequently, they receive specific movement guidelines. The third block provides practical opportunities for activity, while the final stage focuses on long-term behavior maintenance. Consequently, the project aims to satisfy basic psychological needs: autonomy, competence, and relatedness.
Researchers utilize the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) to measure primary outcomes. Additionally, they assess secondary outcomes such as movement metrics through self-reports and accelerometry. This methodology ensures a rigorous evaluation of how lifestyle shifts impact mental well-being. Moreover, the trial tests whether psychological factors like relatedness mediate the relationship between activity and symptom reduction. Therefore, clinicians may soon have a clearer evidence base for prescribing multifaceted movement interventions.
These behaviors encompass the entire 24-hour cycle, including moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, light activity, sedentary behavior, and sleep duration.
SDT helps by targeting the psychological drivers of behavior change. By enhancing a patient's sense of autonomy and competence, the intervention promotes long-term adherence to healthier lifestyle habits.
The study specifically focuses on adults aged 20 to 59 years who currently experience depressive symptoms, regardless of their gender.
