Population aging presents significant challenges to global healthcare systems. Consequently, researchers are increasingly focusing on improving the healthspan of older adults. This period, defined by years spent in good health, allows seniors to remain active and maintain a high quality of life. In this context, urban care farming is emerging as a critical behavioral intervention. It specifically integrates agricultural activities into urban environments to promote active and healthy aging strategies.
Care farming involves the therapeutic use of farming practices to provide health, social, or educational services. Furthermore, these programs offer a multisensory environment that stimulates cognitive function and physical activity. Specifically, participants engage in sowing, transplanting, and harvesting vegetables. These activities foster a sense of purpose and achievement. Moreover, the social nature of group farming addresses isolation, which is a major concern in geriatric populations. Thus, the intervention aims to improve biopsychosocial health outcomes through a multicomponent approach.
A recent trial protocol outlines a parallel-group, 2-arm pragmatic waitlist randomized trial to evaluate this intervention. Researchers recruited 137 community-dwelling participants aged 50 to 85 years. Specifically, 67 participants started a 24-week urban care farming program, while the waitlist control group initially received no intervention. The primary outcome measure is the World Health Organization Quality of Life-brief version. Additionally, secondary outcomes include cognition, frailty, and physiological markers. Researchers utilize mixed-effects difference-in-differences regression to analyze repeated measurements accurately. This robust design aims to provide empirical insights into the multifaceted health benefits of nature-based interventions.
The outcomes of this study could significantly inform scalable models of community-based programs. Similarly, these results may guide public health strategies to address aging-related health issues. Because the intervention is non-pharmacological, it offers a sustainable way to enhance well-being without increasing medical costs. Furthermore, successful implementation could serve as a model for future intervention research on active aging. Clinicians should consider such community-based programs as valuable adjuncts to traditional geriatric care.
