Researchers specifically examined data from 11 systematic reviews and 15 meta-analyses. Consequently, they aimed to clarify the link between industrial formulations and chronic diseases. They utilized the NOVA classification system because it effectively defines these products as industrial formulations with high sugar and saturated fat levels.
Furthermore, the findings indicate a stark contrast in health risks across different age groups. In children and adolescents, for instance, high consumption correlates with increased body fat and adiposity. Moreover, these young populations face a higher risk of respiratory diseases. Conversely, adults face even more severe consequences. Specifically, researchers noted an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and all-cause mortality. Additionally, the review identified significant links to mental health issues. Therefore, patients with high intake may suffer from anxiety and sleep disorders. Furthermore, high consumption is associated with colorectal and prostate cancers in men, as well as breast cancer in women.
While the overall data suggests a negative impact, the review also identified some nuances. Specifically, consuming certain processed cereals and dairy products was associated with a decreased risk of hypertension and weight gain. However, most industrial formulations remain harmful due to their hyper-palatability and low nutrient density. Consequently, clinicians should prioritize dietary counseling that emphasizes whole foods over processed alternatives. Additionally, the researchers assessed the quality of the included studies. Because they rated 16 as good quality, the findings carry significant clinical weight. Nevertheless, the strength of evidence remains heterogeneous across different outcomes. Therefore, medical professionals must interpret these results with caution when advising patients. Nonetheless, the consistent association with chronic non-communicable diseases underscores the need for urgent public health interventions and dietary modifications.
UPFs are industrial formulations that typically contain five or more ingredients, often including substances not used in home kitchens like mass-produced oils and stabilizers. Common examples include carbonated drinks, packaged snacks, and reconstituted meat products.
The umbrella review found that adults consuming high levels of UPFs have a significantly higher risk of mental and sleep disorders. Specifically, evidence points toward an increased prevalence of anxiety and common mental disorders among frequent consumers.
