Recent evidence highlights a significant shift in public attitudes toward nicotine use. A 2024 national survey in Italy explored the population's stance on various tobacco control policies. Specifically, the study evaluated support for the "Smoke-Free Generation" (SFG) and "Tobacco 21" (T21) initiatives. Researchers found that 67.0% of adults support banning sales to those born after a certain year. Furthermore, nearly 72.9% of participants back raising the minimum purchase age to 21 years.
The survey also addressed environmental protections and advertising. Over 80% of Italians support banning e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products in indoor public spaces and workplaces. Globally, nations are adopting similar measures to curb the tobacco epidemic. For instance, India recently introduced the COTPA Amendment Rules 2024. These rules mandate stronger pictorial warnings and anti-tobacco spots on digital platforms. Moreover, India has already banned the production and sale of electronic cigarettes through central legislation. Such tobacco control policies remain essential for reducing the burden of non-communicable diseases like lung cancer and cardiovascular disorders.
Public health experts emphasize that these regulations protect vulnerable populations. By denormalizing nicotine use, governments can significantly decrease smoking prevalence. Continued monitoring of public opinion remains vital for the success of these legislative efforts. Effectively implemented laws can lead to longer life expectancy and improved quality of life for the entire population.
The SFG policy aims to ban tobacco sales to individuals born after a specific year. This measure creates a permanent age limit that rises every year, effectively phasing out tobacco use for future generations.
Raising the age to 21 (Tobacco 21) helps delay the initiation of smoking. Since most nicotine addiction starts during adolescence, this policy reduces the likelihood of long-term dependency and improves respiratory health.
