As Parkinson's disease progresses, patients often face mobility challenges, cognitive decline, and an increased symptom burden. Consequently, traditional in-person visits become increasingly difficult for both patients and their families. This study investigates how remote technologies can complement traditional care models to provide timely and effective palliative support.
Remote consultations significantly improve access for patients who might otherwise struggle to visit a clinic. Many participants in the study noted that talking about palliative care remotely saved considerable time and energy. However, virtual interactions sometimes reduced the perceived emotional connection between the patient and the provider. Successful integration of telemedicine in PD palliative care requires addressing several critical prerequisites. Barriers such as low digital literacy and advanced age can often hinder the effective use of technology. Additionally, providers must resolve ethical concerns regarding privacy and the financial costs associated with digital infrastructure. Proactive engagement from healthcare professionals is essential to support patients who may feel overwhelmed by new digital tools. By providing independence and clear guidance, clinicians can facilitate a smoother transition to remote care models.
The study concludes that patients generally prefer physical visits for deep emotional support, yet telemedicine is a robust alternative when travel is no longer feasible. It serves as a crucial bridge to sustain care continuity and distribute expert palliative knowledge across the healthcare network. Ultimately, remote tools empower patients with Parkinson's disease to receive the care they need, regardless of their physical limitations.
It enhances access by allowing patients to consult specialists from the comfort of their home. This reduces the physical strain of travel while facilitating better coordination between neurologists, general practitioners, and palliative care teams.
