Reliable methods for tracking pediatric eating patterns are essential for managing childhood nutrition and obesity. Traditional mobile phone ecological momentary assessment (EMA) often suffers from low compliance due to the burden of long questionnaires. However, micro-EMA (\u03bcEMA) via smartwatches provides a single-tap solution to capture data in real-time. This study evaluates how effectively children and adolescents in a middle-income setting interact with these wearable technologies.
Researchers recruited 100 participants aged 7-18 years in Segamat, Malaysia. Participants wore smartwatches for eight days to test the technology. The devices prompted users hourly between 9 AM and 8 PM. Specifically, the prompts asked for information regarding meals, snacks, and drink consumption. Consequently, the team measured adherence through the response rate to these digital prompts while exploring variables like age and sex.
The median response rate across the study was 68%. Female participants showed significantly higher engagement than males. However, the response rate declined over the week, dropping from 74% on the first day to 40% by the seventh day. While most children rated the experience positively, physical discomfort was a common reason for discontinued use. Therefore, improving device ergonomics is crucial for future tracking pediatric eating patterns in clinical settings.
For clinicians, these findings suggest that while smartwatches are acceptable tools for short-term data collection, long-term monitoring requires strategies to maintain engagement. Doctors should consider device comfort and the timing of prompts when recommending digital health tools. Furthermore, understanding that adherence peaks during midday can help in optimizing when to request critical health data. Future protocols may need to incorporate focus group feedback to reduce the \"missingness\" of data over extended periods.
Micro-EMA uses single-tap responses on smartwatches, which is much less intrusive than unlocking a phone to answer longer questionnaires. This significantly reduces the cognitive and time burden on the child.
Adherence often drops due to participant fatigue and physical discomfort from wearing the device continuously. Addressing device comfort and revising reporting protocols are essential steps for future research.
The study found that female participants were more likely to respond to prompts than male participants. This suggests that engagement strategies might need to be tailored based on demographic factors.
