Researchers recently investigated the SEN virus prevalence among hemodialysis patients in Iraq. Moreover, the study identified a co-infection rate of 7.50% for genotypes D and H within the dialysis cohort. No co-infections appeared in the control group. The data also revealed a very strong association between distinct SENV genotypes and the status of Hepatitis B virus (HBV) or Hepatitis C virus (HCV). Additionally, SENV positivity correlated with elevated serum levels of Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST) and Alanine aminotransferase (ALT). Consequently, these correlations suggest that SENV might exacerbate liver injury in patients already compromised by other hepatotropic viruses.
Therefore, health officials should categorize SENV as a serious blood-borne threat. Because the virus exists in both patients and donors, it suggests a persistent risk of transmission through blood exposure. Ultimately, regular screening could help mitigate the spread of these genotypes in clinical settings.
