Researchers recently investigated the SEN virus prevalence among hemodialysis patients in Iraq. This DNA virus often links to blood transfusions and serves as a significant cause of post-transfusion hepatitis. Specifically, the study focused on SENV-D and SENV-H, which belong to the non-A to E hepatitis category. Because these viruses pose risks to patients requiring frequent blood exposure, understanding their distribution is crucial for clinical safety.
The investigation included 120 participants from the Ibn-Sina Dialysis Center and a control group of blood donors. Among the dialysis patients, the SEN virus prevalence for genotype D reached 12.50%. In contrast, the control group showed 0.00% prevalence for SENV-D. Furthermore, the researchers detected SENV-H in 6.25% of the dialysis group compared to only 2.50% in the controls. These findings highlight a significantly higher risk for individuals undergoing regular hemodialysis.
Moreover, the study identified a co-infection rate of 7.50% for genotypes D and H within the dialysis cohort. No co-infections appeared in the control group. The data also revealed a very strong association between distinct SENV genotypes and the status of Hepatitis B virus (HBV) or Hepatitis C virus (HCV). Additionally, SENV positivity correlated with elevated serum levels of Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST) and Alanine aminotransferase (ALT). Consequently, these correlations suggest that SENV might exacerbate liver injury in patients already compromised by other hepatotropic viruses.
Therefore, health officials should categorize SENV as a serious blood-borne threat. Because the virus exists in both patients and donors, it suggests a persistent risk of transmission through blood exposure. Ultimately, regular screening could help mitigate the spread of these genotypes in clinical settings.
