Lipedema is a chronic adipose disorder often associated with significant physical impairments and reduced quality of life. While conservative treatments are the mainstay of management, the role of rESWT for lipedema has recently gained attention. A prospective within-patient study now provides evidence regarding its impact on clinical and imaging outcomes.
Researchers evaluated twelve women with clinically diagnosed lipedema who underwent six sessions of radial extracorporeal shock wave therapy. One limb received treatment, while the other served as an internal control. Consequently, this design allowed for a direct comparison of tissue changes. The participants were assessed at baseline, six weeks, and three months post-treatment.
The results showed significant improvements in functional capacity and physical activity levels. Moreover, quality of life scores improved significantly compared to baseline measurements. Ultrasound and elastography data revealed a measurable decrease in subcutaneous tissue thickness. However, the most notable finding was the reduction in tissue stiffness at predefined leg and thigh sites.
Additionally, segmental bioimpedance analysis demonstrated better fluid distribution within the treated limbs. These findings suggest that shock wave therapy potentially improves the microenvironment of the adipose tissue. Therefore, clinicians might consider this non-invasive therapy as a beneficial adjunct to standard protocols like compression and exercise.
Radial extracorporeal shock wave therapy delivers mechanical energy to the tissues. This process may stimulate microcirculation and help reduce the thickness of fibrotic adipose layers commonly found in lipedema.
The study reported significant gains in functional capacity and physical activity levels. Patients also reported a marked improvement in their general health-related quality of life over the three-month follow-up period.
