Survivors of migration-related trauma and gender-based violence face significant mental health challenges, including PTSD. Therefore, implementing effective psychosocial interventions for migrant women is essential for holistic recovery. Consequently, recent research highlights how group-based formats foster social support and normalisation. This approach allows women to share experiences while building resilience in a safe environment. However, clinicians must carefully manage the complexity of migration trauma alongside violence-related distress.
A scoping review of seventeen studies identified thirteen distinct intervention models. Specifically, these programs include arts-based therapies, traditional therapeutic counseling, and skills-focused training. Furthermore, about half of these interventions were designed specifically for migrant survivors. In contrast, the other programs were established psychosocial models adapted for this specific population. Additionally, many programs combined relaxation techniques with strength-based strategies to enhance empowerment and safety.
Healthcare providers often encounter unique challenges when delivering these services. For instance, many women report initial hesitancy to join group sessions due to privacy concerns or stigma. Because of this, combining group sessions with individual support may prove more effective. Moreover, practitioners must prioritize safety and emotional regulation throughout the recovery process. Likewise, tailored interventions focus on helping women regain a sense of control over their lives through empowerment.
Recovery for migrant women who have experienced SV or IPV requires a context-sensitive approach. Therefore, practitioners should consider cultural backgrounds and specific migration journeys. Moreover, providing a holistic framework that addresses both mental health and social needs is crucial. Indeed, this ensures that interventions are not only clinically sound but also practically accessible. As a result, survivors can move toward long-term stabilization and healing.
The main goals include fostering social support, normalising traumatic experiences, and enhancing emotional regulation. Specifically, these programs aim to empower survivors while providing a safe space for healing.
A hybrid model combines individual and group support. Because survivors often feel hesitant to share in groups initially, individual sessions build trust before transitioning to group-based work.
