The development of a robust One Health surveillance dataset is vital for modernizing how we track and manage infectious diseases. A recent scoping review has highlighted that a Minimum Essential Dataset (MED) facilitates cross-sectoral data sharing. This integration is essential for early detection of zoonotic threats. However, the study reveals that current research often neglects the environmental and animal interfaces of health. Consequently, we need more comprehensive data structures to protect public health effectively.
Researchers analyzed twenty-eight studies and found a significant imbalance in data focus. While nearly ninety percent of MED development centers on human health, the animal and environmental sectors receive less than eleven percent of the attention. Therefore, we must broaden our scope to include diverse data sources. Standardizing these datasets will help clinicians in India better understand the transmission dynamics of diseases like leptospirosis and scrub typhus. Furthermore, improving data integration between sectors can prevent fragmented responses to emerging outbreaks.
Qualitative methods currently dominate the field of dataset development. Meanwhile, data-driven approaches remain surprisingly scarce in the literature. To address this, the study proposes a clear pathway for establishing, modifying, and improving surveillance tools. This operational tool aims to guide interdisciplinary teams through the complexities of cross-sectoral collaboration. Implementing these standardized steps can significantly enhance future pandemic preparedness. Additionally, a more rigorous approach to data modification ensures that surveillance systems remain relevant as pathogens evolve.
For medical practitioners in India, these findings underscore the necessity of the National One Health Mission. Since many emerging infections are zoonotic, doctors play a critical role in reporting clinical cases to the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP). Integrating human clinical data with animal health metrics can lead to more accurate risk assessments. Consequently, this collaborative approach improves patient outcomes and public health safety. Healthcare professionals should advocate for better data interoperability to streamline disease notification and response.
