Maintaining independence, mobility, and an optimistic outlook remains their primary goal. Finally, there is a clear mandate for compassionate communication. Patients explicitly reject ageist or overly clinical language, preferring respectful, multi-modal engagement.
Furthermore, research indicates that while nonagenarians face higher surgical complication rates, their mortality is often lower than the general population of the same age. This suggests that careful patient selection and preparation are critical. Surgeons should focus on discussing how the surgery might restore function rather than just focusing on survival rates.
In India, where family-led decision-making is common, integrating these patient-centered values is crucial. Surgeons must involve both the patient and caregivers in nuanced discussions. Moreover, shifting the focus from numerical risk to functional gains aligns better with the expectations of Indian families seeking to improve an elder\'s daily life. Clinical tools should be redesigned to prioritize dignity and clarity, ensuring that the patient's voice remains central to the surgical plan.
For many nonagenarians, abstract percentages do not resonate with their existential context. They often prioritize how a procedure will affect their daily independence and dignity rather than just the statistical probability of survival.
Research shows that quality-of-life factors, such as regaining mobility and maintaining autonomy, are usually prioritized over simply extending life. They often view surgical risk as a pragmatic trade-off for better function.
Clinicians should use clear, respectful language and avoid medical jargon or ageist assumptions. It is vital to use multiple communication modes and confirm the patient\'s understanding through techniques like the "teach-back" method.
