Researchers recently identified a novel neuron-enriched long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) named Neuid. This specific transcript plays a pivotal role in maintaining the integrity of brain cells. Interestingly, studies show that Neuid in Alzheimer's disease is significantly downregulated. This reduction contributes to the loss of neuronal identity and subsequent cognitive decline. It also causes significant memory formation deficits in animal subjects. Conversely, researchers used CRISPRa technology to overexpress Neuid in Aβ42-treated neurons. This intervention successfully restored network function and neuronal plasticity. Thus, targeting this lncRNA could potentially reverse some aspects of AD pathology. Finally, these findings position Neuid as a promising biomarker and drug target.
