Recent research underscores that MVPA and cognitive performance are intrinsically linked in the elderly population. While physical activity is a known modifiable factor for cognitive health, the specific impact of different intensities has remained less clear. A new study utilizing compositional data analysis (CoDA) has provided objective insights into how we spend our time—whether in bed or engaged in various levels of movement—and how these choices affect our mental acuity.
The study analyzed 927 older adults from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) cohort, with a mean age of 82.7 years. Participants wore wrist-worn accelerometers to track sedentary behavior, low-light physical activity (low-LIPA), high-light physical activity (high-LIPA), and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). Notably, researchers found that increased time spent in MVPA, relative to other activities, was consistently associated with better global cognition, memory, and executive function. Consequently, shifting even a small portion of daily routine toward higher-intensity movement may offer protective benefits for the aging brain.
Conversely, the study revealed a surprising trend regarding low-intensity movements. Greater time spent in low-LIPA relative to other activity domains was consistently linked to poorer cognitive performance. Furthermore, these negative associations remained statistically significant even after adjusting for factors like gait speed. This suggests that while any movement is often encouraged, a high reliance on only low-intensity activity might serve as a biomarker for underlying cognitive impairment or physical frailty. Sedentary behavior also showed a specific negative impact on executive function, reinforcing the need to minimize prolonged inactivity.
For clinicians in India, these findings emphasize the importance of advising older patients on the quality, not just the quantity, of their physical activity. Transitioning from sedentary or low-intensity habits to moderate-to-vigorous exercise is crucial. Therefore, monitoring activity intensity through wearable technology could become a standard part of assessing cognitive risk. Physicians should encourage activities that elevate the heart rate to optimize long-term cognitive outcomes in the elderly.
