Research connects music and threat perception through a process known as cross-modal affective priming. A recent study by Lua LF et al. explores how horror soundtracks influence our interpretation of emotional facial expressions. Specifically, the researchers paired auditory fear cues with visual stimuli. They discovered that scary music significantly biases how we perceive social interactions.
Affective priming occurs when an initial stimulus influences the response to a subsequent target. In this study, participants viewed angry, neutral, and happy faces. Notably, participants rated faces as more threatening after listening to scary music compared to white noise. Consequently, this effect extended even to happy faces. The music distorted their positive meaning, perhaps conveying ill-intent instead of genuine joy.
Furthermore, the researchers used pupillometry to measure physiological arousal. They found no overall effect on pupil size from the music alone. However, an interaction showed increased dilation specifically for neutral faces. This suggests that ambiguous stimuli are highly susceptible to priming. Therefore, scary music alters evaluations both behaviorally and physiologically.
Understanding these effects is crucial for clinicians studying social cognition. Moreover, environmental sounds may unconsciously shape how individuals perceive social safety. For example, patients with anxiety might misinterpret neutral expressions in stressful auditory contexts.
