Digital classroom activities often lead to sedentary behavior among students in modern educational settings. However, researchers are now exploring mixed reality physical activity to transform screen time into active movement. A recent formative study specifically examined how this technology can promote movements like jumping and squatting during digital lessons.
The multidisciplinary team tested a prototype with participants aged 10 to 15 years to evaluate its effectiveness. In the first round of pilot-testing, students remained active for 46% of the 15-minute session. Subsequently, the research team improved the prototype based on direct student feedback. Consequently, the second round saw active time increase to 62.4% during web-based assignments. Despite the increased physical intensity, the usability scores remained high, averaging 73.8 out of 100 on the System Usability Scale.
Therefore, mixed reality serves as a promising tool for schools, especially those with limited playground space or budget cuts in physical education. Educators and pediatricians in India should note these findings, given the rising sedentary trends highlighted in recent national health reports. While long-term effectiveness requires further study, the immediate results suggest that digital tools can successfully bridge the gap between learning and health.
