Researchers are currently launching the CAN-TRACK trial to evaluate medical cannabis driving performance. This investigation is essential because prescriptions for therapeutic THC are increasing for patients managing chronic pain, anxiety, and insomnia. However, most road safety laws prohibit driving with any detectable THC in the system. Consequently, this study will provide critical evidence to help balance patient clinical needs with public safety regulations.
Specifically, the first phase utilizes a semi-naturalistic cohort of 72 patients. These individuals suffer from physician-diagnosed chronic pain or insomnia. Moreover, they will complete repeated on-track driving tests before and after taking their standard prescribed doses. In contrast, the second phase involves 24 healthy participants. These subjects will consume alcohol or a placebo to establish a comparative baseline for impairment levels.
The primary outcome measure for the trial is lateral vehicular control, which assesses the driver's ability to maintain a steady lane position. Furthermore, clinicians will perform cognitive assessments and analyze biological samples to measure cannabinoid concentrations. Therefore, the study offers a comprehensive view of how therapeutic doses affect cognitive and motor skills. Additionally, these results will help clinicians in India and globally counsel patients more effectively regarding safe medication use.
This study benchmarks cannabis impairment against a 0.05% blood alcohol concentration. Consequently, researchers can determine if therapeutic THC doses cause impairment similar to legal alcohol limits.
The CAN-TRACK trial specifically studies patients with chronic pain to answer this question. It aims to clarify whether regular therapeutic use leads to significant impairment during real-world driving scenarios.
