The process of leaving violent dating relationships is often a non-linear and arduous journey for survivors. A recent qualitative study explores this trajectory among young Iranian immigrant women in Canada, revealing complex socio-cultural barriers. These women navigate a matrix of domination where intersecting social divisions significantly shape their experiences. Consequently, understanding these dynamics is essential for healthcare providers who manage domestic violence cases.
Research shows that aggressors frequently use cultural scripts of honor to maintain control over their partners. Furthermore, community surveillance acts as a powerful deterrent to help-seeking. Additionally, many survivors express a transnational distrust of legal institutions, which prevents them from utilizing official support systems. Therefore, systemic barriers within the migration context make relationship termination extremely difficult for these individuals.
Clinicians must adopt culturally grounded support strategies to assist these vulnerable patients effectively. Because domestic violence involves nuanced coercive control, standard interventions may fail if they ignore cultural contexts. Moreover, providers should offer a safe, confidential environment to foster disclosure. Finally, understanding the intersectional identities of immigrant women can lead to more tailored and successful clinical outcomes.
Survivors often face unique barriers such as cultural scripts of honor, fear of community surveillance, and a deep-seated distrust of legal and institutional systems in their host country.
Providers should practice cultural humility and use trauma-informed screening tools. Additionally, offering referrals to culturally specific support groups can help bridge the gap in trust and safety.
It is a qualitative research method used to identify and analyze patterns of meaning (themes) within the interviews of survivors, allowing researchers to explore their lived experiences deeply.
