The landscape of Oral Pathology research is evolving. However, significant regional disparities persist in international academic journals. A recent cross-sectional scientometric study analyzed the representation of Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries. Researchers focused on major Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine (OP/OM) publications from 1978 to 2025. The findings reveal a critical link between editorial board participation and regional scientific output.
The study found that LAC-affiliated authors contributed to 13.7% of the 27,188 articles. Brazil alone accounted for over 75% of these contributions. Unfortunately, 11 LAC countries had no publications at all. This lack of diversity extends to leadership roles. Only 13.2% of editorial board members held affiliations with LAC institutions. Most of these members were from Brazil. Consequently, regional representation remains skewed toward a few dominant players.
Researchers identified a strong correlation between editorial participation and publication volume. Therefore, increasing regional representation on editorial boards is vital. This shift will help amplify local research. For specialists in India and other developing regions, these findings are highly relevant. Strengthening regional collaborations and expanding editorial diversity are essential strategies. These actions can create a more inclusive environment in Oral Pathology research. Furthermore, they ensure that journals reflect the true global burden of oral diseases.
Regional representation ensures that research addresses diverse clinical presentations and public health needs specific to different geographic areas. It also reduces bias in the peer-review process and promotes global health equity.
Researchers should seek international collaborations, participate in global academic conferences, and aim for editorial board positions. Mentorship programs within professional societies can also help bridge the gap in publishing experience.
Editorial boards influence the scope and focus of journals. High correlation exists between a region's representation on these boards and its overall publication volume, making diversity critical for regional research growth.
