Involuntary autobiographical memories (IAMs) represent memories that enter consciousness without deliberate effort. Recent clinical research has highlighted the significant role of emotional closure in memories during these spontaneous retrieval processes. By categorizing memories as 'open' (unresolved) or 'closed' (resolved), scientists can better understand the cognitive mechanics behind intrusive thoughts and ruminative patterns.
The study results revealed that participants reported closed memories more frequently than open ones during laboratory-based vigilance tasks. However, the phenomenology of these memories differed significantly. Although participants rated open IAMs as far more emotionally intense and personally important, they encountered them less often than closed memories. Consequently, while we may experience resolved memories more frequently, the unresolved ones carry a heavier psychological burden when they do surface. Furthermore, the absence of a valence difference between the two types suggests that emotional intensity, rather than simple positivity or negativity, defines the 'open' memory experience.
Individual psychological traits also play a vital role in how we experience these spontaneous thoughts. Specifically, the Need for Emotional Closure Scale (NECS) measures a person's desire for firm answers and an end to ambiguity. Notably, individuals with higher emotional closure needs evaluated open IAMs more negatively than closed ones. This interaction suggests that a high need for closure may exacerbate the distress caused by unresolved past events. Therefore, clinicians should consider a patient’s unique need for closure when managing intrusive or repetitive memories. Moreover, addressing the emotional status of a memory might facilitate better mental health outcomes and reduce cognitive interference.
Open memories are those where the emotional issues remain unresolved or ambiguous, whereas closed memories are those where the person feels a sense of finality or resolution regarding the event.
People with a high need for closure tend to evaluate unresolved involuntary memories more negatively, which may increase the emotional burden of these spontaneous thoughts compared to those with lower closure needs.
In a laboratory setting, closed memories appear more frequently during spontaneous retrieval, potentially because they are more integrated into the general life narrative, whereas intense open memories may require specific triggers or are managed through avoidance.
