Shared decision-making in diabetes is a fundamental component of modern, patient-centered care. As the digital landscape evolves, patients increasingly turn to the internet to manage their chronic conditions. This shift significantly influences how patients interact with their clinicians. A recent cross-sectional study examines how online health information acquisition impacts the collaborative process between patients and healthcare providers. By understanding these dynamics, clinicians can better support patients in navigating complex treatment paths.
The study highlights two distinct types of information acquisition: active seeking and incidental acquisition. Active seeking involves intentional searches for specific medical advice. Conversely, incidental acquisition occurs when patients encounter health information while browsing social media or news sites. Both behaviors are prevalent among younger patients with diabetes. Notably, active seeking directly correlates with a higher level of shared decision-making in diabetes. When patients arrive at consultations equipped with information, they feel more empowered to discuss treatment options and voice their preferences.
A critical finding of this research is the role of eHealth literacy as a mediator. eHealth literacy refers to the ability to seek, find, understand, and appraise health information from electronic sources. The study found that eHealth literacy fully mediates the relationship between incidental information acquisition and collaborative decisions. Furthermore, education level serves as a primary driver of digital health literacy. Patients with higher education levels typically demonstrate better skills in filtering credible information from misinformation. Consequently, clinicians must recognize that patients with lower eHealth literacy may struggle to participate effectively in the decision-making process, even if they encounter health information online.
Healthcare providers should view the internet as a tool for engagement rather than a source of interference. Since many patients with poorer general health tend to maintain higher eHealth literacy, they are often more motivated to participate in their care. Therefore, doctors should encourage patients to share the information they find online. This approach allows clinicians to correct misconceptions and guide patients toward high-quality, evidence-based resources. By fostering an environment where digital information is openly discussed, providers can enhance the therapeutic alliance and improve long-term glycemic control.
Active seeking is the intentional search for specific health information, such as looking up medication side effects. Incidental acquisition happens when a patient encounters health-related content unexpectedly while performing other online activities, like scrolling through a news feed.
eHealth literacy provides patients with the skills to evaluate the quality of online information. This competence allows them to participate more meaningfully in clinical discussions, as they can better understand and weigh different treatment options presented by their doctor.
Research indicates that higher education levels are strongly linked to better eHealth literacy. This suggests that patients with less formal education may require additional support from clinicians to navigate online health resources and participate fully in shared decision-making.
