A recent decadal study has mapped the dietary radiation exposure among the southeastern coastal population of India. Specifically, this systematic assessment utilized both Market Basket Survey (MBS) and Canteen Meal Survey (CMS) methodologies. Moreover, researchers analyzed locally consumed food items using high-resolution gamma spectrometry. In addition, they focused on activity concentrations of 226Ra, 228Ra, 40K, and 137Cs. Consequently, the team evaluated the annual effective ingestion dose based on regional adult consumption rates. However, they primarily focused on Radium isotopes for their risk assessment. Furthermore, the human body regulates 40K levels through homeostatic mechanisms. As a result, the ingestion dose from 40K remains relatively constant. Importantly, the study found that 137Cs levels were negligible in the local food chain.
Notably, the Market Basket Survey yielded an annual dose of 0.019 ± 0.01 mSv. In contrast, the Canteen Meal Survey recorded a lower value of 0.007 mSv. Thus, both values fall significantly below global safety limits and regional benchmarks. Therefore, these results indicate that the ingestion doses lie within the reported global range for normal background radiation areas. Finally, this data supports regional radiological risk assessment and long-term environmental monitoring efforts. This study successfully provides a site-specific baseline for chronic exposure in southeastern India.
Radium isotopes like 226Ra and 228Ra are significant contributors to internal radiation doses. Because they behave chemically like calcium, they often deposit in the bones upon ingestion. Monitoring these specific radionuclides allows scientists to calculate potential long-term risks for bone-related health issues.
A Market Basket Survey involves analyzing raw food items collected from markets to estimate average intake. Conversely, a Canteen Meal Survey analyzes prepared, cooked meals directly. The Market Basket approach often provides a more conservative or cautious estimate of exposure compared to cooked meals.
