Recent longitudinal evidence suggests that dietary flavonoids hearing loss prevention may be linked through potent anti-inflammatory pathways. A study of 55,859 UK Biobank participants highlighted how flavonoid-rich diets significantly reduce incident hearing loss risk. Given that hearing impairment is a leading sensory disability worldwide, these findings offer a promising nutritional strategy for auditory preservation.
Researchers tracked participants who were initially free of hearing loss over a follow-up period exceeding 613,000 person-years. The research team calculated the Flavonoid Diet Score (FDS) by aggregating the intake of various flavonoid-rich foods. The results demonstrated that individuals in the highest quartile of flavonoid intake had a 16% lower risk of developing hearing loss. Specifically, the hazard ratio for the highest versus lowest intake was 0.84 (95% CI: 0.73–0.96). Consequently, this suggests that habitual consumption of these bioactive compounds provides a protective cushion against auditory aging.
Biological mechanisms are a central focus of this research. Systemic inflammation is a known driver of cochlear damage and vascular dysfunction in the inner ear. The researchers found that C-reactive protein (CRP) levels significantly mediated the association between flavonoid intake and hearing health. Although the mediation effect was modest at 4.8%, it highlights that reducing systemic inflammation is a critical pathway. Therefore, promoting dietary flavonoids hearing loss interventions could specifically target patients with elevated inflammatory markers.
Clinicians should consider advising patients, especially those at risk for age-related hearing loss, to increase flavonoid-dense food intake. Major contributors to a high score include black and green tea, berries, apples, and citrus fruits. Because these dietary changes are safe and provide multisystem benefits, they represent an ideal adjunctive strategy for geriatric care. Moreover, these findings align with evidence suggesting that antioxidant-rich diets support the delicate microcirculation of the cochlea.
