Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common birth defect worldwide, affecting nearly 1% of live births. While surgical advancements have significantly improved survival rates, long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes remain a major concern for clinicians. A recent population-level study highlights that congenital heart disease disabilities affect children across the entire spectrum of disease severity, not just those with critical defects.
Researchers analyzed data from over 4,000 children with CHD in Australia to identify the use of disability services. They found that 7% of children with severe CHD required specialized disability support. In contrast, only 2.5% of children without the condition needed similar services. Furthermore, children with non-severe CHD still faced a significantly higher risk compared to the general population. Specifically, the odds of requiring intellectual or speech therapy were nearly double for those with moderate defects. However, the highest risk occurred in children who underwent cardiac procedures, showing an adjusted odds ratio of 2.82 for severe cases.
Consequently, pediatricians and cardiologists must prioritize early neurodevelopmental screening for all cardiac patients. The study indicates that the risk persists even when comparing affected children to their healthy siblings. This suggests that the heart condition itself, or the necessary surgical interventions, plays a primary role in development. Therefore, managing congenital heart disease disabilities requires a multidisciplinary approach involving speech therapists, psychologists, and developmental educators. Moreover, early identification allows for timely support, which can drastically improve a child\'s educational and social trajectory. Clinical teams should integrate standardized developmental assessments into routine cardiac follow-ups to ensure no child is left behind.
Children with CHD frequently require services for intellectual disability, autism, and speech delays. Learning and physical disabilities are also more common in this population compared to healthy peers.
While severe cases carry the highest risk, even children with non-severe CHD have a 75% higher chance of needing disability services than children without the condition.
