The persistent nature of Chikungunya is particularly concerning for clinicians because more than half of the total burden involves the chronic phase. This phase is characterized by debilitating joint pain and rheumatic complications that can last for years. For India, which faces high transmission risks, healthcare providers must differentiate these symptoms from dengue, which often co-circulates. Additionally, the development of vaccines like BBV87 in India offers hope for reducing the disease burden in high-risk zones.
To mitigate future risks, authorities must integrate climate information into national preparedness efforts. Strengthening diagnostic capacity and laboratory testing is also essential to address the significant underreporting of cases. Ultimately, global collaboration is necessary to support effective prevention and reduce health disparities across different WHO regions.
