A recent study published in Clinical Rheumatology analyzed data from four large global cohorts to explore this connection. Consequently, researchers discovered that individuals with higher fitness levels have significantly lower odds of developing arthritis. Instead of focusing solely on weight loss, medical educators should emphasize the physiological benefits of aerobic exercise. Higher fitness levels likely improve systemic inflammation and joint perfusion. Consequently, older adults who prioritize cardiorespiratory health may enjoy a higher quality of life. This evidence supports a shift toward fitness-based interventions in geriatric care settings.
Researchers often use validated equations based on age, sex, BMI, and resting heart rate to estimate fitness levels. This method provides a practical alternative to laboratory-based oxygen uptake tests in large-scale clinical settings.
