Visual memory often involves boundary extension, where people remember seeing more of a scene than was shown. However, auditory memory typically exhibits contraction, meaning people remember hearing fewer distinct sounds than were actually present in a scene.
When sounds belong to the same semantic group, the brain can use categorical processing to organize them. Consequently, this grouping makes it easier to remember individual sound sources and reduces the overall effect of memory contraction.
