Evidence-based psychological interventions, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), often fail to reach marginalized groups because they lack cultural context. Traditionally, adapting these interventions is a labor-intensive process for psychologists. However, a groundbreaking study exploring AI for cultural CBT suggests that artificial intelligence might bridge this gap more efficiently than human experts.
Researchers recently conducted a 2×2 factorial design study to compare how Arabic-speaking refugees perceived CBT techniques. They evaluated two core methods: cognitive restructuring and behavior modification. These materials were adapted either by an AI text generator or a professional human psychologist. The participants, residing in Sweden, Denmark, and Germany, blindly rated the materials for cultural relevance and acceptability.
The results showed a significant main effect in favor of artificial intelligence. In the first round of ratings, participants perceived the texts adapted by the AI domain as more culturally relevant than those adapted by human psychologists (P=.02; η²=0.045). Regarding the specific AI for cultural CBT techniques, no significant difference existed between cognitive restructuring and behavior modification in terms of relevance.
Interestingly, when measuring the "Theoretical Framework of Acceptability," there were no significant differences between the AI and human groups. This suggests that while AI may be better at tailoring language to specific cultural nuances, both sources are equally acceptable to the end-user. Furthermore, the speed at which AI can process these adaptations could revolutionize how we deliver care to linguistically diverse populations.
Consequently, these findings imply that AI has the potential to accelerate the cultural adaptation of psychological interventions. For clinicians working in diverse settings, like India, this technology could help customize patient education materials across various regional dialects and cultural backgrounds. However, researchers emphasize that AI must still be used with caution. It requires rigorous safety standards and robust ethical frameworks to ensure patient safety.
While AI showed higher perceived relevance in this study, it is viewed as a tool to accelerate the process rather than a total replacement. Human oversight remains essential for safety and ethical integrity.
