Clinicians historically considered adult amblyopia treatment ineffective because the brain’s critical period for visual development had ended. However, modern research into cortical plasticity suggests that the adult visual system remains surprisingly adaptable. Specifically, a recent randomized controlled trial explored a novel approach to stimulate this adaptability by combining physical activity with standard patching.
The study involved sixty adults with unilateral amblyopia aged between 18 and 40. To begin, researchers divided them into two separate groups. Group A underwent conventional occlusion therapy, which involved patching the stronger eye for six hours daily. Furthermore, the improvements were not just marginal. They indicated a synergistic effect between physical exertion and visual rehabilitation. Consequently, patients achieved better functional vision.
Experts believe that aerobic exercise enhances neuroplasticity by increasing brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels. Therefore, this biochemical boost likely "primes" the primary visual cortex. As a result, the brain becomes more receptive to sensory input from the amblyopic eye during patching. Ultimately, these findings suggest that lifestyle modifications can play a pivotal role in ocular health. While patching remains a cornerstone of therapy, adding structured exercise may provide the necessary stimulus for older patients. Additionally, this non-invasive strategy offers a cost-effective way to maximize visual outcomes.
