Developing essential surgical skills in resource-constrained environments remains a significant challenge for modern medical education. A recent study has successfully validated the KeyTrainer (KT), an affordable laparoscopic training box trainer manufactured in Uganda. This innovation aims to provide a sustainable alternative to the expensive simulation equipment typically used in high-income countries.
The research team conducted extensive testing among medical students, residents, and faculty in both Uganda and the United States. Participants completed five technical tasks adapted from the standard Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) curriculum. Consequently, the investigators assessed construct validity by comparing task completion times and error rates across these distinct training levels.
The results clearly demonstrated that the KT can accurately differentiate between various skill levels. Specifically, performance times significantly improved with increasing clinical experience, with faculty members outperforming students and residents across all tasks. Furthermore, content validity was exceptionally high, as over 90% of participants agreed that the device enhanced depth perception and hand-eye coordination.
Moreover, nearly 89% of participants expressed a strong desire to use the trainer in their future practice. This high endorsement suggests that locally manufactured solutions can effectively bridge the training gap in sub-Saharan Africa and similar regions. Because the device uses market-sourced materials, it offers a scalable model for other developing surgical programs worldwide.
