Teaching dialogic reading effectively ensures that future speech-language pathologists (SLPs) provide high-quality care to pediatric patients. This intervention method transforms a passive storytime into an interactive learning session. Consequently, educators continuously seek the most efficient ways to train students in these essential skills. A recent study compared three instructional methods among undergraduate SLP students to identify which approach best serves the needs of modern learners.
The research involved sixty-four students participating in role-play simulations with children. Initially, researchers recorded their baseline use of various strategies. Subsequently, they assigned participants to one of three groups: lecture with self-reflection, lecture with peer feedback, or lecture with expert feedback. After the training period, a second recorded session reassessed their clinical performance. The results highlighted a clear distinction between the feedback-based groups and those relying on personal reflection.
Specifically, teaching dialogic reading through structured feedback proved significantly more effective than relying on self-reflection alone. Both peer and expert feedback groups demonstrated superior gains in strategy implementation. This finding suggests that social interaction and external evaluation are vital for clinical skill acquisition. Furthermore, the similar performance between peer and expert groups indicates that peer-led learning is a robust educational tool. For Generation Z students, who value collaborative and practical learning, these feedback-oriented approaches offer a clear advantage.
In conclusion, instructional methods that integrate real-world scenarios with practice-oriented feedback enhance the mastery of evidence-based interventions. Healthcare educators should consider incorporating structured peer feedback into their clinical curricula. This strategy not only improves clinical competence but also aligns with the modern student\'s preference for interactive feedback. Therefore, moving beyond traditional lectures to more dynamic, feedback-rich environments will likely optimize student readiness for clinical practice.
Dialogic reading shifts the child\'s role from a passive listener to an active storyteller. This technique significantly boosts oral vocabulary, narrative skills, and reading comprehension by using specific prompts like the PEER and CROWD methods.
Peer feedback often succeeds due to social and cognitive congruence. Students share similar learning stages and language, which can reduce anxiety and make critiques more relatable and easier to implement compared to high-stakes expert evaluations.
