Researchers recently investigated a multi-strain synbiotic to improve Salmonella Enteritidis prevention in poultry. This development is highly significant for doctors in India. Specifically, it addresses the rising threat of foodborne zoonoses and antimicrobial resistance. By reducing pathogen carriage in chickens, we can better protect human health across the country. This strategy aligns with the One Health initiative to control infections at their source.
The formulation combines three specific lactic acid bacteria strains known for their probiotic properties. These include Enterococcus faecium, Ligilactobacillus salivarius, and Lactobacillus crispatus. Additionally, the synbiotic contains prebiotics such as raffinose and molasses. This combination creates a hostile environment for pathogens within the avian gut. The researchers confirmed that these strains work together without antagonism to maximize protective effects.
In vitro tests showed clear bactericidal activity against S. Enteritidis. Furthermore, ex vivo assays indicated that the synbiotic prevents bacterial attachment to intestinal walls. Most importantly, in vivo trials in broiler chicks showed a dramatic reduction in infection rates. Specifically, treated birds had only a 30% infection rate compared to 100% in the control group. Consequently, early-life administration provides a sustainable way to decrease the reservoir of Salmonella in the food chain.
For Indian clinicians, these findings suggest a potential decrease in the burden of non-typhoidal salmonellosis. This research offers a viable alternative to traditional antibiotics as growth promoters. Moreover, it helps mitigate the spread of multidrug-resistant bacteria from poultry farms to patients. Therefore, improving Salmonella Enteritidis prevention in livestock is a critical step in modern infectious disease management.
Synbiotics combine probiotics and prebiotics to create a synergistic effect. They inhibit pathogen attachment to the intestinal epithelium and exert direct bactericidal activity, significantly lowering infection rates in the host.
Salmonella Enteritidis is a major cause of foodborne gastroenteritis in humans. Since poultry products are a primary transmission vehicle, controlling the pathogen at the source reduces the public health burden of zoonotic infections and antibiotic resistance.
