Dental erosion symptoms are increasingly prevalent in urban populations, yet many patients remain unaware of the underlying causes. A recent study involving adults in Hong Kong reveals that while nearly all participants reported symptoms, knowledge of the condition was remarkably low. For clinicians, recognizing early signs like tooth yellowing and sensitivity is vital to preventing irreversible enamel loss and secondary complications.
The investigation highlights that 96% of adults experienced potential dental erosion symptoms. Among the most frequent complaints were yellowing teeth (76%) and sensitivity to temperature or acid (65%). Despite these clear indicators, 41% of participants had never heard of dental erosion. This gap in knowledge often leads to delayed consultation; only 38% of those with symptoms sought professional dental advice. Consequently, many patients live with discomfort for years before receiving a formal diagnosis.
Data analysis identified several independent risk factors for a high symptom burden. Middle-aged adults (35-45 years) were found to be at a higher risk compared to younger cohorts. Additionally, dietary habits played a significant role in the progression of the condition. Individuals with a high frequency of eating or drinking episodes—nine or more times daily—showed a significantly higher likelihood of reporting multiple symptoms. Moreover, high knowledge of the condition did not always correlate with better oral health practices, suggesting that education alone may not suffice without behavioral interventions.
In India, the prevalence of dental erosion is reported to be as high as 48% in certain adult populations. Research suggests that the frequent consumption of carbonated beverages, citrus-heavy diets, and the prevalence of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) are primary contributors. Indian clinicians often observe that patients presenting with dentinal hypersensitivity also exhibit signs of erosive wear upon closer examination. Therefore, management strategies should emphasize the use of fluoride-rich oral care products, the use of straws for acidic drinks, and waiting at least thirty minutes after acid exposure before brushing.
The most frequent symptoms include yellowing of the teeth due to thinning enamel and increased sensitivity to hot, cold, or acidic foods. Other signs include rounded tooth edges and the appearance of small hollows on the biting surfaces.
Patients should limit the frequency of acidic food and drink consumption. Using a straw for carbonated beverages and rinsing the mouth with water or milk after acid exposure can help neutralize the pH levels. Additionally, using fluoride toothpaste strengthens the enamel against acid attacks.
Many individuals mistake the early signs of erosion for natural aging or poor hygiene. Because the process is gradual and often painless in the initial stages, patients rarely associate yellowing or mild sensitivity with chemical enamel dissolution until the damage becomes significant.
