Sport for Development (SFD) has emerged as a powerful tool for addressing global social and health issues. In the last decade, researchers have increasingly explored how physical activity and play can serve as vehicles for development. These initiatives aim to attain various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including health promotion and gender equality. Despite the growth in research, a comprehensive evaluation of these review contributions was previously missing from the literature.
A recent systematic scoping review identified 21 key reviews published since 2000. These studies highlight diverse thematic focuses that align closely with international development objectives. Researchers found that Sport for Development programs frequently target educational outcomes, health improvements, and social inclusion. Furthermore, novel areas such as critical pedagogy and managerial implications are gaining traction within the discourse. These findings suggest that sport is no longer just about competition; it is a strategic asset for community well-being.
However, the review also identifies significant hurdles. Reaching a consensus on the exact developmental potential of sport remains difficult. Methodological limitations and a lack of rigorous quality assessments often hinder the evidence base. Additionally, the dominance of English-language publications creates a linguistic barrier that may exclude valuable local perspectives. Consequently, there is a pressing need for more inclusive research that considers diverse cultural contexts and non-colonial narratives.
The conclusions of the study emphasize the importance of bottom-up approaches. Effective Sport for Development programs require long-term monitoring and evaluation to track changes over time. Practitioners should prioritize local participation and cultural sensitivity to ensure sustainable impact. Moreover, expanding disciplinary engagement will allow for a more complex understanding of how sport-based initiatives influence health and society on multiple levels.
