Accurate limb measurement is crucial for diagnosing and managing chronic swelling. Recently, researchers validated a novel lymphedema monitoring system that uses a marker-based bodysuit and a smartphone app. This technology aims to solve the issues of observer variability often found in manual tape measurements. Consequently, it offers a high-precision tool for both clinical and home-based settings.
The prospective study included 26 patients presenting with upper or lower limb swelling. Participants wore the ZOZOSUIT2, which contains approximately 20,000 dot markers. Specifically, a smartphone captured 12 full-body photographs to generate a 3D model automatically. Researchers then extracted circumference values from 10 points on the upper limb and 9 points on the lower limb.
The results showed high reproducibility, with median repeatability ranging from 2.2 to 6.4 mm. Furthermore, the system significantly reduced the time required for assessment. While manual tape measurements took nearly five minutes per patient, the digital system completed the process in roughly 88 seconds. Therefore, this efficiency could revolutionize routine monitoring in busy oncology and surgical practices.
Notably, some discrepancies occurred at the wrist and the base of the thigh. However, the system remained highly consistent overall. Given that India faces a significant burden of post-mastectomy lymphedema and lymphatic filariasis, such accessible tools are essential. Consequently, clinicians can track disease progression more effectively without relying on expensive imaging like CT or MRI.
The system shows high repeatability (2.2 to 6.4 mm) and mean absolute errors ranging from 5.5 to 20.5 mm, providing a reliable digital alternative for limb assessment.
