The study found a concerning temporal trend: the proportion of hospitalizations classified as \"major severity\" more than doubled between 2009 and 2022. Specifically, major severity cases rose from 12.7% to 27.3%. Similarly, the risk of mortality increased from 2.9% to 12.6% during the same period. This suggests that despite medical advancements, patients are presenting with more acute complications. Clinicians must focus on early intervention and region-specific resource allocation to address these worsening trends.

The Government of India's National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission aims to screen millions and improve care by 2047. Just as observed in the New York study, Indian healthcare faces regional disparities in access to hydroxyurea and specialized hematological care. Strengthening primary and secondary care linkages is essential to reducing the burden of acute sickle cell disease hospitalizations across diverse Indian states.
The increase may be due to a combination of an aging SCD population reaching higher-risk years and persistent barriers to preventive care. As patients live longer, they often develop chronic organ damage, leading to more severe acute episodes.
Outcomes vary based on the proximity to specialized hematology centers and the availability of resources. Urban areas often have better access to comprehensive care, which can lead to lower mortality risks despite a higher volume of patients.
