Based on these insights, the study proposes several strategies to enhance Severe Maternal Morbidity care across multiple levels of the healthcare system. At the policy level, recommendations include expanding insurance coverage for doulas and improving parental leave policies to support physical and mental recovery. Organizationally, healthcare systems should prioritize workforce diversity and implement extended perinatal visits. These changes ensure that clinicians have the necessary time to build meaningful, trust-based relationships with their patients.
Additionally, clinician-level training should focus heavily on bias reduction and trauma-informed care. Healthcare providers must recognize that every patient encounter is an opportunity to validate the survivor's experience and provide psychological safety. On a patient level, facilities should provide robust advocacy resources and clear educational materials. Therefore, integrating patient-centered support into the standard care pathway can mitigate many of the systemic barriers identified by survivors. These findings align with broader global efforts, including those in India, to move toward more respectful, equitable, and whole-person maternity care.
