Recent environmental health research indicates that legacy mining continues to pose significant ecological risks. Specifically, mountaintop removal coal mining releases massive amounts of selenium into nearby water bodies. Although many assume that closing a mine resolves pollution issues, new evidence suggests that selenium toxicity in fish persists for decades. This bioaccumulation occurs even in areas where mining operations ceased over forty years ago.
Researchers conducted a comprehensive study in Crowsnest Lake, Alberta, which receives runoff from the decommissioned Tent Mountain Coal Mine. Despite the mine closing in the 1980s, fish samples showed tissue selenium concentrations between 5 and 26 μg/g. In contrast, fish from reference lakes without a mining history contained significantly lower levels. Therefore, the persistence of selenium in the aquatic food chain remains a critical concern for local communities and healthcare providers.
Furthermore, the consumption of contaminated fish can lead to human health complications. Chronic exposure to high selenium levels often causes selenosis, a condition characterized by hair loss, brittle nails, and gastrointestinal distress. Because the margin between nutritional necessity and toxicity is narrow, medical practitioners must remain vigilant in mining regions. Consequently, environmental monitoring and dietary advisories are essential to protect public health from long-term industrial legacies.
Selenosis is a condition caused by chronic selenium poisoning. Symptoms typically include a garlicky breath odor, metallic taste, hair loss, and neurological damage in severe cases.
Selenium persists because it leaches from large volumes of waste rock left behind by mining. It bioaccumulates through the food web, moving from algae and invertebrates to fish, where it stays for decades.
