For instance, dogs supplemented with 1,000 mg/day of POLYCAN beta-glucan exhibited significantly higher concentrations of serum calcium and immunoglobulin G (IgG). Furthermore, researchers observed a marked increase in growth hormone and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) levels. These hormones are critical for metabolic regulation and immune health. Interestingly, while serum glucose levels decreased, the supplement did not negatively affect growth performance or nutrient digestibility.
Moreover, the supplementation significantly reshaped the gut microbial landscape. The study noted a higher Shannon index, which indicates improved microbial diversity. Specifically, the relative abundance of beneficial taxa like Lactobacillus, Butyricicoccus, and Prevotellaceae increased during the treatment phase. In contrast, populations of Bacteroides and Bacteroidota significantly decreased. Consequently, these shifts suggest that POLYCAN beta-glucan acts as a potent prebiotic, fostering a healthier intestinal ecosystem.
Additionally, metabolomic profiling highlighted a strong correlation between microbiome changes and serum metabolites. Supplemented beagles showed increased levels of essential amino acids such as L-methionine, L-threonine, and L-proline. These findings indicate that the supplement enhances metabolic efficiency by modulating the gut-metabolome axis. In summary, the research supports the use of this yeast-derived fiber to enhance hormonal and gastrointestinal health.
