A comprehensive 55-year study on northern gannet (Morus bassanus) eggs provides critical insights into the long-term behavior of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). These substances, commonly known as \"forever chemicals,\" are persistent organic pollutants widely used in industrial applications for decades. Consequently, their chemical stability and bioaccumulation potential pose significant ecological and human health risks. Researchers analyzed 17 different PFAS types in eggs from the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Canada, spanning from 1969 to 2024. The study highlights how forever chemicals PFAS risks continue to threaten marine top predators long after initial regulations take effect.
The research identified perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) as the dominant compound throughout the 55-year period. Significantly, PFOS concentrations peaked in the mid-1990s and began to decline thereafter. This reduction directly correlates with voluntary phase-outs and subsequent international regulatory measures. However, the study reveals a concerning lag in the response of other long-chain perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs), such as perfluorododecanoic acid (PFDoA). Furthermore, the ecological half-life for total PFAS was estimated at approximately 60 years. This extreme persistence suggests that historical contamination will remain a public health and environmental concern for generations.
Data showed that concentrations of PFOS remained above established toxicological thresholds for nearly 30 years. Such prolonged exposure indicates severe ecotoxicological risks for species at the top of the food chain. For clinicians, these findings underscore the pervasive nature of PFAS, which are known endocrine disruptors. In India, the Food Safety and Standards Authority (FSSAI) has recently proposed stricter regulations for PFAS in food packaging to mitigate these risks. Therefore, understanding the long-term trajectory of these chemicals is essential for risk assessment and the development of future health guidelines.
PFAS exposure is linked to various health issues, including endocrine disruption, elevated cholesterol levels, impaired immune response, and increased risks of certain cancers, such as kidney and testicular cancer.
Long-chain PFAS, such as certain PFCAs, often show a delayed response to regulations because of their high chemical stability and continued presence in existing industrial stocks or environmental reservoirs.
Individuals can reduce exposure by using PFAS-free cookware, avoiding stain-resistant treatments on carpets and upholstery, and choosing food products with minimal grease-proof packaging.
