Early pediatric cataract detection remains a critical priority for preventing lifelong visual impairment in children. A recent study evaluated the diagnostic performance of the CatScreener among medical students and junior ophthalmologists. The researchers analyzed 250 eyes from infants and young children under the age of eight. Proficiency in pediatric cataract detection using the CatScreener typically requires approximately 50 cases. This low threshold for operational mastery makes it an ideal tool for general practitioners and pediatricians in rural or resource-limited settings. Furthermore, the device maintains stable performance across different age groups, from neonates to older children. Such versatility is essential for implementing universal screening programs that can reduce the burden of avoidable blindness.
