Outpatient pharmacists play a critical role in patient safety and medication management. However, traditional training often focuses on theoretical lectures and clinical rotations. These methods frequently lack objective assessments of practical clinical competencies. A recent study by Luo J et al. explores the effectiveness of OSCE pharmacist training to bridge this gap in healthcare education.
The researchers conducted a single-center study using a quasi-experimental design. They compared two groups of trainees: Group A received traditional teaching, while Group B utilized an OSCE-based model. This structured model included three distinct training stages: Basic, Specialized, and Overall. Furthermore, the assessment featured four specific OSCE stations to evaluate diverse practical skills.
The results showed that Group B significantly outperformed Group A in both practical skills and comprehensive scores. Specifically, OSCE scores positively correlated with the results of the three-stage evaluations (r = 0.72, P = 0.008). Although Group B initially struggled with Pharmacy Administration, targeted training quickly improved their performance across all assessment stations. Consequently, approximately 91.67% of trainees found the OSCE model highly practical for their professional development.
Additionally, the OSCE model provided a clear framework for identifying individual strengths and weaknesses. It allowed educators to offer precise feedback, which is often missing in clinical rotations. Therefore, the application of this model serves as a valuable tool for both teaching and objective assessment in pharmacy education. This structured approach ensures that pharmacists can apply their knowledge effectively in real-world clinical scenarios.
The success of the OSCE model suggests it should be integrated into broader standardized training programs. While this was a single-center study, the positive outcomes highlight its potential for wider adoption. Transitioning to competency-based assessments will likely enhance the quality of outpatient pharmaceutical services. Ultimately, well-trained pharmacists contribute to better patient outcomes and reduced medication errors in the healthcare system.
