Nursing well-being is a critical foundation for delivering high-quality healthcare and ensuring sustainable nursing careers. In the specialized field of elderly care, nurses often encounter intense psychological, physical, and ethical challenges. A recent cross-sectional survey published in Contemporary Nurse explored the factors that influence nurse well-being in geriatric care settings. This research highlights how resilience and the work environment directly impact the professional lives of early career nurses.
The study analyzed 262 qualified nurses in Finland. It found that early career nurses reported moderate levels of well-being. Several factors showed strong associations with their satisfaction. For instance, nurses who had clear career plans in geriatric services reported higher well-being. Additionally, psychological resilience and high physical work capacity emerged as vital personal resources for managing the daily demands of the profession.
The most striking findings from the multivariable analysis identified two primary predictors of better well-being: physical work capacity and the absence of unethical conduct. Specifically, nurses who never observed unethical behavior in their workplace maintained significantly higher levels of professional well-being. Consequently, healthcare organizations must prioritize ethical transparency and physical support systems to retain their younger workforce.
Furthermore, the work environment fit remains a significant factor. When the environment aligns with a nurse\'s skills and expectations, burnout rates typically decrease. Therefore, managers should focus on creating supportive organizational cultures. In India, where the geriatric population is growing rapidly, these insights are invaluable for hospital administrators seeking to reduce high nurse attrition rates. By addressing these ethical and physical domains, facilities can ensure a more stable and satisfied nursing team.
Educational and political actions are necessary to support sustainable nursing careers. Strengthening resilience training during nursing school can prepare graduates for the complexities of elder care. Moreover, leaders should implement zero-tolerance policies regarding unethical conduct to protect the psychological health of their staff. Improving physical ergonomics within care settings also contributes to long-term career sustainability for those entering the field.
Geriatric care often involves physically demanding tasks, such as lifting or repositioning patients. High physical work capacity helps nurses manage these demands without excessive fatigue or injury, directly boosting their overall job satisfaction.
Observing unethical behavior creates moral distress and psychological strain. This distress significantly lowers well-being and is one of the strongest predictors of whether a nurse decides to leave the geriatric specialty.
Hospitals can implement structured mentorship programs, provide ergonomic equipment to reduce physical strain, and foster an ethical workplace culture where nurses feel safe reporting concerns.
