Current research, including the Danish PRISME cohort study, suggests that peripheral Neuropeptide Y levels do not differ significantly between individuals with major depressive disorder and healthy controls. Therefore, it is not currently considered a reliable diagnostic biomarker for MDD.
Studies indicate that Neuropeptide Y levels increase as a person ages. This age-dependent rise is a significant predictor of NPY concentrations, regardless of a person's mental health status or body mass index.
