Recent psychological research highlights the growing concern of social media use disorder among university students. This condition involves an inability to control social media habits, which leads to psychological distress and functional impairment. Furthermore, a new study utilized latent profile analysis (LPA) to explore how internal traits like mindfulness and experiential avoidance influence this behavior.
The study analyzed data from 826 students aged 18 to 25. Specifically, the researchers sought to understand the co-occurrence of conscious awareness and avoidance behaviors. Results showed that mindfulness is negatively correlated with both social media disorder and experiential avoidance. Conversely, a positive correlation exists between social media disorder and the tendency to avoid unpleasant internal experiences. Notably, the LPA identified four distinct student profiles. These profiles illustrate how different levels of awareness and avoidance combine to predict addiction risk. Consequently, clinicians can use these patterns to tailor interventions for young adults.
Moreover, experiential avoidance involves a person's reluctance to stay in contact with distressing thoughts or feelings. Instead of facing these emotions, individuals often turn to digital platforms as a coping mechanism. Therefore, increasing mindfulness may serve as a protective factor. It encourages staying present rather than retreating into virtual environments. Future research will likely explore these patterns across different educational levels and age groups.
Mindfulness acts as a protective trait. It increases conscious awareness of the present moment, which reduces the impulsive need to engage with social media. Consequently, individuals with high mindfulness are less likely to develop social media use disorder.
Experiential avoidance occurs when a person tries to escape unpleasant internal feelings. In the context of digital habits, people often use social media to distract themselves from stress or anxiety. Thus, higher experiential avoidance is linked to a greater risk of social media use disorder.
