A major psychological study recently explored the connection between language genderedness and personality across 48 global languages. Researchers analyzed data from over 755,000 individuals using the IPIP-NEO-120 personality assessment. Interestingly, the findings indicate that the way a language treats gender grammatically may significantly influence how speakers perceive themselves. This suggests that linguistic structures are not merely passive tools for communication but active participants in shaping identity.
The study utilized multiple methods to assess language structure. Specifically, expert ratings were combined with word-embedding models from large text corpora and evaluations by advanced large language models. Across all these measures, the result remained consistent. In countries where the primary language has high levels of genderedness, personality differences between men and women were markedly stronger. In contrast, speakers of less gendered languages showed more overlapping personality profiles.
Understanding these patterns is vital for mental health professionals working in multilingual settings. Therefore, clinicians should be aware that a patient's native tongue might subtly influence their psychological self-reporting. For example, a person speaking a highly gendered language might exhibit personality scores that reflect cultural gender roles more strongly than a speaker of a more gender-neutral language. Consequently, this study highlights the need for culturally and linguistically sensitive diagnostic tools.
Furthermore, the data (r = .51-.59) suggests a moderate to strong correlation. This link persisted even when holding the assessment language (English) constant for all participants. Therefore, the effect appears to stem from deep-seated cognitive frameworks built by the native language. Professionals in psychiatry and general practice can use this knowledge to better interpret personality assessments across diverse populations.
