Improving interoceptive awareness for eating disorders is a critical step toward achieving sustainable clinical recovery. Interoception involves the ability to perceive and interpret internal bodily signals, including hunger, satiety, and emotional states. Research indicates that interoceptive dysfunction often acts as a maintenance factor for eating pathology. Consequently, clinicians are looking for targeted interventions to address these specific deficits within intensive treatment settings.
A recent pilot study investigated the feasibility and preliminary effects of the Reconnecting to Internal Sensations and Experiences for Eating Disorders (RISE-ED) program. This adapted intervention focuses on enhancing interoceptive awareness for eating disorders through structured modules. While fifty-four individuals originally participated in pre-assessments, the final analytic sample consisted of seventeen participants due to various discharge and entry errors. Despite the small sample size, the results provided significant insights into the program's potential utility.
Participants rated RISE-ED as both acceptable and effective for their recovery journey. Furthermore, every participant in the analytic sample completed at least three modules. Most importantly, the preliminary data showed a significant reduction in interoceptive deficits, with a medium-to-large effect size (d = 0.68). These findings suggest that integrating such programs into intensive treatment is not only feasible but also highly beneficial for patients.
Clinicians can utilize these findings to refine their therapeutic approach. Because many patients with eating disorders feel disconnected from their bodies, RISE-ED offers a roadmap for reconnection. Moreover, staff feedback indicated that the program is easy to integrate into existing treatment frameworks. However, while these signals are promising, larger randomized controlled trials are necessary to confirm these effects across broader populations.
It refers to the patient's capacity to accurately sense and respond to internal physiological signals, such as hunger or heart rate, which are often impaired in those with eating disorders.
RISE-ED uses specific modules to help patients reconnect with their internal sensations, aiming to reduce the psychological distress often associated with bodily signals.
Deficits in interoception can lead to a reliance on external rules for eating rather than internal cues, which often perpetuates restrictive or binge-eating behaviors.
