Government Stance on Front-of-Pack Labelling

Minister for Women and Child Development, Annpurna Devi, recently clarified the government\'s position regarding nutritional transparency. She informed the Rajya Sabha that there is currently no proposal to design a specific Front-of-Pack Labelling awareness campaign. This decision comes despite the ongoing discussions about identifying empty calories in ultra-processed snacks. However, the government remains committed to improving public health through other existing frameworks and nutritional guidelines.

Addressing HFSS Foods and Hidden Hunger

The Ministry emphasizes the importance of understanding dietary risks. According to the ICMR-National Institute of Nutrition, HFSS foods contain excessive cooking oil, fat, sugar, or salt. These products contribute significantly to lifestyle diseases. Additionally, the minister highlighted the issue of hidden hunger, which refers to essential micronutrient deficiencies. Consequently, the government is focusing on education regarding these dietary components rather than a new Front-of-Pack Labelling initiative. Therefore, healthcare providers should continue to educate patients on reading standard nutrition labels carefully.

Strengthening Nutritional Programs

The government has already advised states and Union Territories to limit added sugar in supplementary nutrition. This directive applies to take-home rations and hot cooked meals for vulnerable groups. Specifically, these groups include children, adolescent girls, and pregnant or lactating mothers. Furthermore, authorities have instructed states to avoid HFSS foods across all age groups. They also encourage moderation in edible oil consumption, particularly saturated fats. To support this, many public locations now feature oil and sugar boards to sensitize households about hidden ingredients.

Existing Health Initiatives

While a new Front-of-Pack Labelling campaign is not pending, several other programs are active. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) continues to lead the Eat Right India movement. Similarly, the \"Aaj se Thoda Kam\" campaign encourages citizens to reduce their intake of salt, sugar, and fat. These measures aim to prevent childhood obesity and promote balanced diets. Moreover, regular sensitisation activities occur during Poshan Maahs and Poshan Pakhwadas. These fortnightly events focus on healthy lifestyles and reducing oil consumption across the community.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What is the primary goal of Front-of-Pack Labelling?

Front-of-Pack Labelling aims to provide clear, simplified nutritional information on the front of food packaging. This helps consumers quickly identify high levels of salt, sugar, or fat in ultra-processed foods.

Q2: How is the government addressing HFSS food consumption in children?

The government has advised states to avoid HFSS foods in supplementary nutrition programs. Additionally, it promotes healthy lifestyles through Anganwadi centers and targeted community campaigns like Poshan Maah.
