Even after thermal treatment, the bioaccessibility of fipronil and its sulfone metabolite remained remarkably high, ranging between 70.62% and 94.24%. Therefore, a significant portion of the remaining residues can still enter the human circulatory system after ingestion. This high absorption rate emphasizes the need for stricter monitoring of poultry feed and environments to prevent initial contamination.
For clinicians, these findings are particularly relevant when assessing patients with unexplained endocrine or neurological symptoms. Chronic ingestion of even low-level residues can lead to thyroid hormone clearance and hepatic enzyme induction. Furthermore, fipronil is classified as a suspected carcinogen. In addition to monitoring, educating patients on diverse cooking methods may offer some level of risk reduction. However, it is important to remember that cooking does not eliminate the hazard entirely.
