As technology evolves, the integration of ethical AI in nursing becomes essential for modern healthcare delivery. Consequently, nursing education must prepare students to engage with these technologies responsibly. A recent exploratory qualitative study examined the perspectives of fourth-year nursing students regarding this digital shift. The researchers aimed to identify the primary concerns and perceived benefits of artificial intelligence in clinical practice.
The study involved 18 senior nursing students selected through purposive sampling. Through semistructured interviews, the participants shared their unique viewpoints. Interestingly, the analysis revealed five main themes. These themes included the functional contributions of AI to learning and perceived clinical risks. Additionally, students emphasized the necessity of maintaining human-centered and holistic care. They also highlighted ethical risks and the potential for inequality in healthcare access.
According to the results, students maintain a balanced and cautious perspective. They recognize that AI can enhance learning and clinical efficiency. However, they expressed strong concerns about the erosion of professional judgment. Many believe that technology should support, rather than replace, the nurse-patient relationship. Therefore, educators must incorporate ethical reasoning and justice-focused frameworks into nursing curricula. This approach ensures that future nurses can navigate the complexities of digital health without losing the human element.
In summary, while AI offers transformative potential, the human aspect remains irreplaceable. Students advocate for a future where technology serves as a tool for better patient outcomes. Ultimately, preserving ethical responsibility and professional judgment is vital for the successful integration of AI in nursing. Educators must continue to adapt, ensuring students are ready for a tech-driven landscape.
